Main temple of the Rinzai sect Shokokuji School. Built at the request of Ashikaga Yoshimitsu the 3rd shogun of the Muromachi period and completed in 1392. Yoshimitsu installed in the temple an office for overseeing all Zen temples. For a period the temple had a central role in administration of the Zen sect.
